The second National Competition of Children’s Scientific and Research Works in the field of enrichment of the animal habitat “A Zoo of Harmony” took place in Feldman Ecopark.
The competition is aimed at exchange of experience on environmental enrichment for captive animals between zoos; training of young naturalists in work with animals, mindset formation essential for skilled staff of a modern zoo; to exchange experience on keeping conditions for the animals staying out of their habitat.
In addition to the young naturalists of Feldman Ecopark, delegations from zoos of Kyiv, Odessa, Mykolaiv and Rivne took part in the three-day event. 15 scientific works were presented during the competition.
“The environmental enrichment for captive animals is now one of the main parts of work of world zoos. European Association of Zoos and Aquaria conducts conferences and seminars for animal keepers. However, such events for young naturalists (future animal keepers) don’t exist, so we decided to hold a Competition of Children’s Scientific and Research Works in the field of enrichment of the animal habitat for young naturalists of Ukrainian zoos, “- the curator of the competition, the head of the Theatre of Children and Animals Anna Harazhina told.
The competition programme included open stand protection – an opportunity to share modern views on keeping conditions for the animals with visitors; a round table for group leaders – exchange of experience between employees from different zoos; an interactive tour, as well as a night tour and performance in the Feldman Ecopark’s Theatre of Children and Animals. At master classes, young naturalists from different cities together learned ways of enrichment that are used in Ecopark and other zoos. For example, they made sweet paintings and hammocks for apes, toys for predators and other elements of animal habitat enrichment.
Veronica Kogan from Kiev with the work «Efficiency assessment of substantive fodder enrichment of reticulated giraffe’s habitat in the Kiev Zoo.” got first place from the professional jury. Pupils of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy Feldman Ecopark Lisa Khadenko and Kateryna Kanevska with the work “Enrichment of the habitat of Belarusian gibbons.” took second place. Ukraine’s participation in the Conference meeting of Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which takes place from 17 to 28 August in Geneva (Switzerland), is an important step towards combating international animal illegal trade. Oleksandr Feldman, President of the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) stated on this issue. According to him, the fact that global problem of illegal rare animal species trade has been given priority by the current Ukrainian authorities suggests positive changes in our society.
“Poaching and the related illegal sale of wild animals, as well as materials of zoological origin (horns, beavers, skins, etc.) is causing enormous damage to the biodiversity of our planet. The scale and consequences of this transnational criminal activity require consolidated response of the international community – Mr. Feldman told. – Here, the responsible approach of every state is important, including Ukraine, which ratified CITES in 1999. For this purpose, it is necessary not only to improve legislation, but also to form public opinion, to conduct information work with Ukrainians.”
He also stressed that Feldman Ecopark has participated and will continue to participate actively in this work.
The number of visitors to the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex, one of the most important functions of which is preservation of rare and endangered species, exceeds 1 million people per year. This gives us a unique opportunity to convey important information on combating international animal illegal trade to a large number of people, to promote initiatives related to CITES, – Oleksandr Feldman reminded. – We cooperate with many international environmental organizations, such as EAZA and ERAZA, develop a number of educational, eco-public projects. We are able and we will use the lessons learned to develop our own initiatives to prevent poaching and illegal animal trafficking. We already have some developments in this direction related to the reduction of demand for such activities and the formation of public opinion.”
It should be noted that the 18th Conference meeting of Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 17 to 28 August. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky authorized Volodymyr Domashlynets, the head of the profile department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources to participate in the negotiations and decision-making of this event. Participants are considering proposals for changes to the trade regulation regime for more than 500 species of wild flora and fauna. Combating illegal trade, as well as the call of members of the European Parliament and environmental organizations to outlaw trophy hunting, are important issues on the agenda.read more

This visit was organized by ATO veterans volunteers, who have been curating a local teaching and educational complex for five year period.
“We got acquainted at the beginning of 2015. The situation was extremely difficult: the continuous fighting and daily shelling. Besides, winter in those regions was cold and hungry. Soldiers of our brigade helped pupils and teachers of Artemivsk school with products, fuel, construction materials, giving them all the help they could— the ATO veterans volunteers told. — Finally, we took patronage over them. The first time we brought children to Kharkiv during autumn holidays in 2015. Most of them are children and their friends from the nearest Nizhneteplivsk and Petropavlivsk schools, who got permission from their parents to visit wonderful Feldman Ecopark today. — the director of Artemivsk Special Educational Complex of the Stanytsia-Luhansk district of the Luhansk oblast Victoriia Lyubchenko told. – For our children it is an emotional rest, remedy against stress and mind-broadening experience, they were actually cut off from a civilization at dangerous front edge. Earlier, we were able to take them to Luhansk on sightseeing tours, including theatre and circus – now, it is impossible. Fortunately, we can arrive to Kharkiv, in a wonderful Ecopark, where we are always welcomed.”

The first weekend within the Kazka Fest project in Feldman Ekopark organized by the International Charitable Foundation “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation” with the support of Ukrainian Cultural Foundation within the framework of its programme “Prominent Event for Ukrainian Culture” was devoted to a fairy tale therapy. Young guests to the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex were able to try this healing methodology, while their parents adopted it at home. During the past weekend, workers and volunteers of the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation held in total twenty sessions focused on different age groups – from 3 to 7 years. In specially equipped reading tents children plunged into the magic world of imagination by means of toy and living characters – kittens and rabbits. Each fantastic session finished with psychotherapeutic interaction in a group: study of the read plot in a game form with animators, drawing and cutting from color paper. In addition to reading tents, at Feldman Ecopark paths appeared gallery of fantastic illustrations and stands where everyone was able to paint his/her favourite fantastic hero, make own version of famous fairy tale by means of drawings.
According to the head of psychological service of the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Aliieva, fairy therapy is a synthesis of scientific achievements of psychology and pedagogics with art. The main lever of fairy therapy is a metaphor as a basis of any fairy tale. Precision of chosen metaphor defines efficiency of fairy therapy skills in work with both children and adults.
“All fairy tales we chose (both well-known, folk, and new books by modern writers, we sorted out by age and discussed subject especially for parents, and then ciphered them. So, instead of Puss in Boots, Mitten, The Lonely Ant or Velveteen Rabbit, everyone was able to see on posters The fairy tale of courage and ingenuity, The tale of cordiality and hospitality, The tale of friendship and fidelity, The tale of kindness and care. Thereby, we at once explained fairy therapy essence to adults, keeping an intrigue for children”, – Tatiana Aliieva told.
“Fairy tale therapy allows the child to feel more confident, to get rid of fears, to change internally. The child will identify himself with that fairy tale character closest to him by moral and personal qualities. It is an invaluable material for work of the psychologist and attentive, loving parents, – Inna Vashkite explained. – In time told fairy tale means to the child as much as psychological consultation to adult. The only difference is that the child is not obliged to draw aloud conclusions and to analyze his state, everything is going at the internal, subconscious level.”
It should be reminded that this August the International Charitable Foundation “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation”, with support of Culture Foundation within frameworks of its programme “Prominent Event for Ukrainian Culture” launched new cultural project of national scope — The Kazka Fest. Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation opens a Health Camp for troubled children within the framework of the Take Children Away from Streets project development. Children from the Kharkiv Centre for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children will rest and improve their health in it every day till the start of the next educational year. A special programme was developed for them including the psychocorrective lessons with the use of eco-therapy, educational and profession-oriented events and, of course, various games and entertainments.
“Despite their young age, these children have gone through a lot of things: many of them are from problem families, some of them encountered domestic violence. There is a risk of formation of deviant behaviour. That is why they especially need social improvement and professional psychological support,” the head of the Kharkiv Centre for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children Hennadii Umanets told. “We expect that this new joint project implemented with our colleagues from Feldman Ecopark will give the most positive results, as an open-air recreation and communication with animals is the best medicine for the soul.”
The programme of the Health Camp includes excursions to all locations of Feldman Ecopark, communication with its animals, acquaintance with the fundamentals of animal soft training, teaching of riding skills and ungulate caring. Everyday training will necessarily include landscape therapy, canis therapy and other types of animal-assisted therapy, as well as various forms of art therapy including bibliotherapy and fairytale therapy. According to the experts, the latter perform diagnostic and preventive functions, as they make it possible to watch the dynamics of psychoemotional state of children and correct it softly.
“We tried to mobilize all resources of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex and its projects as much as possible including Good Home, Bat Rehabilitation Center, Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy,” the scientific curator of the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Borys Mykhailov told. “In addition, other NGOs and volunteers expressed their wish to become partners of our Health Camp and to do what they can to help. They are ready to give master classes, hold various events, help in children’s leisure organization.”
According to the director of the International Charitable Foundation “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation” Maksym Vodka, the Health Camp for troubled children is a kind of continuation and development of the Take Children Away from Streets project, which was launched in 2014.
“From the moment of its establishment, our Foundation has implemented a lot of programmes and projects for the rising generation. The position of its founder Oleksandr Feldman is as follows: taking care of our children we improve the future. And this new project is another brick in the foundation of these changes,” Maksym Vodka emphasized. “Thousands of children will have a rest and improve their health in Feldman Ecopark this summer. We have not just a complex rehabilitation environment here for this purpose, but also real high-level professionals. And we are ready to share our experience and resources with others to achieve our common goal – bring up a spiritually and physically healthy future of Ukraine.”

Kazka Fest, a nation-wide massive cultural project, will take place in Kharkiv’s Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex Feldman Ecopark in August. According to the announcement made by the Feldman Ecopark’s partnership projects manager Vadym Vorotynskyi in the Vremia Media Centre today, Kazka Fest starts this weekend, August 3-4, and will continue till September 1.
The project is organized by the International Charitable Foundation “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation” with the support of Ukrainian Cultural Foundation within the framework of its programme “Prominent Events for Ukrainian Culture.”
Within the framework of Kazka Fest, various activities for children and adults will be organized each weekend: theatrical performances, concerts and other events, children’s book fair, master classes, quests, literature readings with the participation of modern authors of fairy tales, open-air library, as well as the children’s fairy tale contest with the following publication of Kazkabook: a collection of 15 fairy tales with recommendations for parents on how to work with them.
This weekend, the participants of Kazka Fest will be offered to attend fairy tale therapy lessons: the specialist will read fairy tales together with children of different age groups in three locations and then try to perform the plots by their own (starting at 11 a.m.)
“Unfortunately, children are currently one of the most vulnerable groups, which are subject to the influence of situation in our country. Exactly fairy tale, as the most accessible literary form for children, has an effective psychorehabilitation effect and makes it possible to develop imagination, fantasy, creativity,” Vadym Vorotynskyi emphasized.
“Kazka Fest is a logical continuation of those projects, which are implemented in Feldman Ecopark and in its Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation for many years. Fairy tale therapy uses different variants of creative involvement and creative self-fulfilment of people, which is especially important for children. In Feldman Ecopark, in its ‘fairy-tale’ world, these lessons have a unique format. That is why the experience obtained here should be spread across the other regions of Ukraine in the future,” scientific curator of the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Doctor of Medicine, professor, Ukraine’s Honoured Scientist and Engineer Borys Mykhailov emphasized.

Two kids were born in the family of capybaras in Feldman Ecopark in the beginning of July. Unfortunately, their mother refused to take care of them, and the workers of the Multi-Complex had to take the newborns under their care.
“The kids feel fine, grow up healthy and active. They are fed with bottled goat milk, although Edik and Tiomka (we gave these names to little capybaras) would not mind eating fresh greens from the first days of their life. Moreover, they love water procedures – not for nothing capybaras are called by Indians as ‘children of grass and water.’ This behaviour is typical for the representatives of this species of these semiaquatic herbivorous animals. Their young are born absolutely formed, with fur and able to see. They are ready to almost immediately follow their families,” the head of Feldman Ecopark’s Rodents and Terrarium Sector Svitlana Vyshnevetska told.
According to her words, for the first several days Edik and Tiomka spent night at her place, as the little ones required attention and care twenty-four hours a day. Now they spend all the time with their family – father, mother and older siblings. This group consists of seven animals.
“No one offends the little ones. On the contrary, the old ones watch them: if the kids spend too much time in the pool and sit under the water, they are turned out of the water to get warm. They are very friendly animals, which are tolerant to others. Here, they peacefully spent winter with Dalma the tapir. Now, they share a splendid summer enclosure with huge African spurred tortoises,” Svitlana Vyshnevetska noted.
It should be noted that capybaras are the largest rodents of our time. South America is their native land. The word, which gave the name to the species means ‘king of grass’ in the language of local Indians. In Europe, these animals are named more prosaically – water pigs. Capybaras are the social creatures. They live near water bodies in groups of 20 animals on average. They have a very easy character – they are tamed easily and co-exist with other animals perfectly.
It should be reminded that the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark is one of the largest in Ukraine with nearly 2,000 animals of 300 species.read more
The specialists of Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark Olena Prylutska and Vitalii Hukov, as well as young naturalists Rita Moiseienko and Iliia Nekrutov have been motitoring bats in the National Natural Park Homilshanski Lisy (Kharkiv oblast) for two weeks. The goal of such monitoring is to find out what species of bats live in a certain territory.
The head of the Center Anton Vlashchenko and Olena Prylutska started studying bats in this national park in 2008, then they found 11 species of bats (from 14 known in this region). Here they live in hollows of trees, give birth to cubs and eat insects all summer.
“It’s not that easy to catch a bat at night: special mist nets are used in such cases. Specialists sit near them for hours from dusk till dawn. As soon as small animal got caught in a net, it has been carefully got out and put in a sack. In the morning, each individual is sized up, ringed and returned to nature with nightfall” — told in the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark.
This year, the students of Karazin Kharkiv National University, who traditionally had practical training at the Biological Research Station and two students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv joined the specialists of the Center.
The Center conducts such monitoring every three years, they help to learn more details of bat life, knowing that every species is listed in Ukrainian Red Book.
It should be reminded that the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark is a unique animal protection organization not only for Ukraine, but also for entire Eastern Europe. Since its establishment, it rescued more than 12,000 of these animals.read more
The founder of a Multi-Complex thanked parents for trust.
Biggest and the only free children’s health-improving and educational camp in Kharkiv opened in the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex of Feldman Ecopark. The founder of the Social and humanitarian Multi-Complex, the Ukrainian MP, Oleksandr Feldman wrote about this on his Facebook page.
“Dear friends, as I promised: today, free children’s summer health-improving camp launched in Feldman Ecopark. As you know, we couldn’t start accepting children earlier because of the campaign trail: otherwise, it would have been taken as bribing of voters. Since the morning, despite sleepless night and ongoing counting of votes, we already sent first groups for rest in a Multi-Complex. Only the first day, 250 children were accepted. They are going to have cheerful and informative pastime. Our team – the workers of the charitable foundation and Ecopark, educators and leaders, tour guides and entertainers will do everything possible to make the impressions from the summer camp bright and the recollections unforgettable. I express a huge gratitude to parents who trust us their children!” — the people’s deputy wrote.
According to the press service, it is the fifth season of the children’s camp. Traditionally, the International Charitable Foundation “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation” undertook all financial and organizational load. The entertainment programme, daily nutrition and transportation will cost nothing for families of resting children. Six-day session is a real kaleidoscope of games, developing lessons, master classes carried out by the professionals of the Master City, excursions of Ecopark, walking tours, orienteering and, of course, acquaintance with its four-legged residents, as well as the walks along its picturesque neighbourhood. In turn, children will be awarded with unforgettable experience from their visits to the Horse Complex, Pony Farm, Good Donkey farm, and the Young Dog Handlers Club. Like the previous season, this one will include the special programme for children with special needs.
It should be reminded that the children’s health-improving and educational camp was first launched in Feldman Ecopark in 2015. More than 10,000 children from Kharkiv and Kharkiv region rested here free of charge.read more
A fox-cub with a broken leg was brought to the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home.”
A weakened animal with a big suppurated injury in poor condition (perhaps, it fell into a trap) was noticed in the industrial area by caring Kharkiv residents. They addressed animal advocates, who, in turn, brought a fox-cub for emergency treatment and rehabilitation in Good Home.
During the examination, it has been found that the leg cannot be saved. The fox-cub was operated urgently in order to stop the spreading of infection. It still feels bad so far, but there is a hope that the appetite for life wins. Nevertheless, a long rehabilitation is waiting for the animal anyway.
“It’s a great luck that this cub was noticed and brought to us: without medical assistance it could face a long and painful death. We will make everything possible to set it on the legs. After that it will stay in our Good Home, as it’s just impossible for this fox-cub to survive in the wild,” the head of Good Home Iryna Podvoiska emphasized. “Injured and sick foxes, raccoon dogs and other wild animals found in the city become our patients more and more often. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is a thoughtless killing of stray dogs, the place of which in the city’s ecosystem is taken by unadapted forest residents.”
It should be noted that this fox-cub is not a single problem patient that has recently appeared in Good Home. Thus, after the call received by Good Home’s hot line, a kitten (which was named Hope) knocked down by a car near the Gorky Park was brought to the veterinarians. A blow was very heavy: a kitten had avulsive wounds, broken legs and tail, and craniocerebral trauma. It was operated seriously, and its tail and leg were saved. The cat is not so frightened anymore and looks much more cheerful. It eats enough and walks along the box limping slightly.read more
Another addition to the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark. Japanese macaque cub was born last week. Aссording to Olga Prokopova, the head of the sector Apes of Feldman Ecopark, the kid is healthy, eats maternal milk and stays together with mother in common enclosure with other representatives of this species.
“Newborn is a male, not a firstborn. A female is already skilled and responsible mummy — constantly stays with her kid, takes care of him, feeds and massages kid’s gums for teeth to grow quicker. Other individuals do not offend them. This group consists of three males and one more senior female. On the contrary, during the postnatal mealtime order changed — the nursing mother eats right after the leader, and then other members of bunch, including the macaques standing earlier in upper level in the hierarchy — Olga Prokopova told. – Such behavior is typical for social animals. We currently strengthened a diet for everyone to have enough delicacies and to avoid conflicts because of status changes. We feed Japanese macaques twice a day. Breakfast consists of vegetable marrows, tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables, as well as crackers and nuts. For dinner we give sweet fruit, such as tangerines, oranges, bananas, apples, grapes”.
It should be noted that Japanese macaques is the species of monkeys, steadiest against frosts, adapted for climate when snow covers the ground for three months and more, and average winter temperature can be 5 degrees below zero. The Japanese macaques are known for their habit to wait a winter icy cold, sitting in warm springs.
It should be reminded that the ape collection of Feldman Ecopark is one of the biggest in Eastern Europe. It includes nearly 250 animals of 30 species. The animal collection of Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex totals more than 2,000 animals of 300 species.read more
Now everyone is able to watch what Feldman Eсopark’s animals eat and how they do it. Public feedings of animals with elements of enrichment of the animal habitat will take place every day in accordance with a special schedule. This process will be followed by small informative lectures about diet of various exotic representatives of fauna, such as white tigers, hornbills, Patagonian Maras, binturongs, baboons, capybaras and many others.
“Practice of public animal feeding is widespread in many European zoos. Crowds of adults and children come to see how our four-legged friends eat. We currently apply such form of eco-educational work, especially since our visitors and subscribers in social networks repeatedly asked about this — told in Feldman Ecopark. – From Monday to Sunday, everyone will be able to watch a breakfast or a lunch of someone from our numerous animals, to learn interesting facts from their life, to see what means concern for the welfare of animals and enrichment of their habitat. And, of course, to make a small animal gastronomy photo shoot.”
It should be noted that the animal feeding schedule will be updated every Tuesday on Feldman Ecopark’s website and in social networks under the heading “#где_обедал_воробей”. Schedule for this and following week is listed below:

New vulture enclosure, built by modern standards appeared in Feldman Ecopark. Visitors to the Multi-Complex are able to see a vulture in its new spacious house (20 m x 25 m).
“Enclosure for black vulture is a test (indicative) enclosure from a series of 5-6 enclosures of the Raptor Path built with due regard for the experience of our colleagues from Netherlands and Kazakhstan. We hope to receive birds from them soon. We will send them a picture of this enclosure as the proof of seriousness of our intentions and demonstration of our opportunities” — the head of the science and monitoring department of Feldman Ecopark Andrii Hapchenko told.
The black vulture is one of the largest representatives of birds of prey of Eurasia; this species is listed in Ukrainian Red Book and VU species, IUCN. This is the largest representative of birds of prey in Feldman Ecopark. According to Andrii Hapchenko, in addition to black vulture, the Ecopark also comprises bald and white-tailed sea eagles, while rehabilitated birds, such as kestrel, buzzard and harrier, we usually return to the natural habitat.
The Raptor Path is one of two projects (the second is Hornbill Pavilion, currently under construction within cooperation with the Indonesia Zoo and Aquarium Association) planned within the Park of Birds programme of Feldman Ecopark. This programme is not limited to exposing of birds; one of its goals is participation in projects on bird reintroduction.
“We expect a visit of our colleagues from the Odessa zoo having more than 25 years’ experience of reintroduction of birds of prey and owls. It is planned that they will bring to us young eagle owls – local subspecies, also found in the Kharkiv oblast. Perhaps, eagle owls will become the first birds of this programme, which we are going to launch together with National Natural Parks of the Kharkiv oblast, – Andrii Hapchenko told. – Besides, saker falcon and imperial eagle will participate in the programme, and potentially a black kite and white-tailed sea eagle, as well.”
It should be reminded that The Park of Birds project was launched in Feldman Ecopark this year. Its main goal is to preserve rare species of birds and return them to their natural environment. Moreover, it is aimed at the popularization of this field of animal protection and eco-education of youth. It is planned to create Ukraine’s largest and one of the largest European complexes of ornithological enclosures representing local Red List and exotic birds.read more
Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex Feldman Ecopark was one of the first in Ukraine to start in 2014 the implementation of the rehabilitation programme for the victims of the War in Donbas (IDPs from the conflict zone in the East of Ukraine, ATO servicemen and the members of their families, children living in the front-line territory), and has already provided assistance to nearly 10,000 persons. From the very beginning, this programme attracted the experts of the National League of Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Medical Psychology and Kharkiv Medical Academy of Post-graduate Education under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, who established the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Feldman Ecopark a year earlier. The foundation for their work was the use of drug-free methods – the animal-assisted therapy, landscape therapy, art therapy and so on, which were united by Kharkiv scientists into a synthetic method called ‘eco-therapy.’
“Eco-therapy is a brand new concept in medicine. It gives priority to the complex use of natural factors and cultural environments, as well as creativity for the creation of therapeutic climate, which favourably influences a patient,” the head of the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation of Feldman Ecopark, Doctor of Medicine, professor, Ukraine’s Honoured Scientist and Engineer Borys Mykhailov. “As an additional and supportive method, eco-therapy demonstrated positive results in the work with different categories of people, who were affected by the War in Donbas, especially children, who were deprived of peaceful childhood.”
It should be noted that Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation implements several targeted programmes for the fourth year running, and each of them differs with own specificity. Thus, the programme “Let’s Restore the Life Together” is aimed at the psychological rehabilitation of the family members of ATO (JFO) servicemen, while “Ukraine in One Rhythm” is aimed at the socialization of IDPs and arranges the tours to happy childhood for the children living in front-line territories. The programmes “The War in the Eyes of Children” and “Let’s Take Children away from Streets” are aimed at psychological support of children, who were affected by the War in Donbas to a greater or lesser degree, and at the deviant bahaviour among teenagers.
“The horrors of war experienced by people will, unfortunately, remain in their hearts forever. It is very difficult to adapt to peaceful life without the professional assistance of specialists after hiding from bullets in basements. It is especially difficult for children. And we apply maximum efforts to return them to common life. I will never be tired to repeat: children must have a happy childhood and we, adults, are responsible for this,” the founder of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex, Ukrainian MP Alexander Feldman notes.
It should be reminded that Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex Feldman Ecopark exists in Kharkiv oblast since 2011. It is a favourite place for the rest of Kharkiv residents and guests of the city, as well as one of the top sights in Eastern Ukraine. More than 7.5 million people from dozens of countries around the world have already visited it, and it is an absolute record among the similar Ukrainian parks. Feldman Ecopark is a charitable project of the International Charitable Foundation “Alexander Feldman Foundation” and its partners, and all of the events and programmes are free of charge for their participants. Main fields of activities of Feldman Ecopark cover psychological rehabilitation of children and adults, global animal and environment protection projects, and the issues of flora and fauna preservation.read more
The Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” took on rehabilitation a stork rescued by volunteers. A few weeks ago, citizens of one of Kharkiv districts found young bird, almost a nestling, that, most likely, lost parents. They reported to All-Ukrainian hotline about the bird and brought it to a Multi-Complex. Foundling already underwent veterinary examination and is under the care of animal keepers. According to the head of the Birds department in Feldman Ecopark Volodymyr Perekhodovych, a stork feels well. As soon as it grows up and will be able to eat by its own, the bird will join relatives and other waterfowl on the Swan Lake.
“We thank caring people for picking up this nestling aged one or one and a half months, otherwise it would become a prey of crows or other predators. At this age, stork nestlings aren’t able to fly and hunt yet and they die without parents. Ours was lucky, now it will be fine — Volodymyr Perekhodovych told. — We feed it six times a day with zofobases, small fish, we catch lizards for a nestling to be adjusted to adult life. We will release it on the Swan Lake soon. A stork will stay there till fall, get stronger, and then it will be able to fly to warm regions. In the spring, perhaps, a stork will return to us if wants.”
It should be reminded that the Swan Lake is a unique nature complex for water birds, which exists in the territory of Feldman Ecopark for three years. Here, on one of the water bodies of the Three Lakes, more than a hundred of birds – swans, pelicans, storks, ducks – live in natural conditions, but under the care of animal keepers. The part of them was rescued and undergoes rehabilitation thanks to the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home.”read more
The Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation of Feldman Ecopark has been providing psychological assistance to families of IDPs from Joint Forces Operation area (Donbas) for four years.
Recently, the next group of families of the Kharkiv modular town for IDPs visited the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex and got a chance to see our animal collection. Besides, they visited Horse Complex and Bat Rehabilitation Center and attended animal-assisted therapy lessons as well.
According to the head of psychological service of the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Aliieva, the main task of this project is to do our utmost to stabilize emotional condition of children who have had difficult times and to restore comfort and internal interaction in families, as well.
“Every summer families from the modular town come to us. This year, the programme for them is structured to provide calm leisure-time in the territory of Ecopark, for children to develop various skills in work with animals, to learn tolerant treatment of them. The main methods of our work in this project are animal-assisted therapy and eco-therapy in general, partially we use canis therapy, which helps to master skills of communication — the head of psychological service of the Centre Tetiana Aliieva told. — Now children meet Ecopark and its inhabitants, with ecosystem in general. For sensory integration allowing children to relax and feel the body, we use Barefoot Health Path. Besides, this year we began to cooperate with the Bat Rehabilitation Center: acquaintance to bats has not only educational value, but also it can help to get rid of phobias.”
It should be reminded that children from the modular town for IDPs were participants of the “Let’s Take Children Away from Streets” programme for children from troubled families and “difficult” teenagers, which was implemented successfully in Feldman Ecopark: according to police, none of the participants of the project comes into contact with the law any more.read more
Today, July 4, Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation in cooperation with social services and Future and Hope Foundation had a meeting with the families in difficult life conditions. The launch of the project is devoted to the Day of Ukrainian Family, which is celebrated on July 8.
Children and their parents had an excursion to the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex, found out more about its animal collection and Horse Complex, about the work of the Bat Rehabilitation Center, and had a walk along the barefooted path. In addition, the lessons with the participation of psychotherapist were given to the parents.
“The main massage we wanted to give to these families, who encountered difficulties. It is the strengthening of family values by way of formation of leisure time and perception of environment. By acquainting them with different species of animal, with their peculiarities, we not only broaden their outlook, but also put the fundamentals of tolerant attitude to the animal world, as well as to each other and to other people,” the head of the psychological service of the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Aliieva. “We acquainted our visitors with the animal-assisted therapy, equine-assisted therapy, canis-therapy. An interesting peculiarity of the meeting was the acquaintance with the work aimed at the rescue of bats. Their participants were able to assess the work of the Bat Rehabilitation Center. Perhaps, in the future, they will express the wish to become its volunteers.”
According to the head of the medical service of the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Inna Vashkite, the event was attended by the families, who encountered certain difficulties, many of them have many children. Therefore, the specialists of the Centre decided to speak to them in question-answer format about the interaction with children, about overcoming of difficulties and any other issues that concern them, and to render psychological assistance to those who need it.
They tell in Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation that the families from all over Ukraine may take part in such one-day meetings all year round.read more
Recently, the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” gave home to five minks and four martens rescued by animal protection activists. Without their intervention, the unenviable fate to become expensive fur coat or other status accessory awaited these fluffy animals. Fortunately, animals are out of danger now – minks are currently staying in quarantine under supervision of veterinarians, while martens settled in separate expository enclosure after short rehabilitation.
“Minks and martens are relatives, unfortunately, possessing valuable fur. Because of it, these small predators of Mustelidae family have trade value from the earliest of times. They have been massively killed on hunting. Therefore, for example, the European mink was hunted to the verge of extinction. Now minks and martens are bred on numerous fur farms for the only purpose: to kill and strip the fur off. In recent years, more and more people have realized inhumanity of such activity and there are increasing number of volunteers redeeming animals from death camps for transmittal to nature protection organizations — told in “Feldman Ecopark Good Home”. – Thus, raccoon dogs, polecats, ferrets, foxes and polar foxes found home in our Multi-Complex. A few weeks ago, four martens (three forest and a stone one) and five minks were brought to Ecopark. Caring people made a good deed – we thank them for these rescued lives!”
According to specialists of Feldman Ecopark, animals feel well. They eat chicken meat, veal, an offal, quail eggs and cottage cheese with appetite. We don’t plan to return them in nature – small animals got used to person and won’t be able to survive independently in the wild any more.
“Another matter is posterity of martens, which, we hope, will appear and sooner, with the proper upbringing, can be released to the nature. As for minks, these individuals belong to the American species, invasive for our territory, and consequently can’t be introduced. Unlike European mink, whose reintroduction we plan to develop in the near future” — the head of the science and monitoring department of Feldman Ecopark Andrii Hapchenko noted.
It should be reminded that Feldman Ecopark together with the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) actively participates in preservation and return to the natural habitat of different types of Ukrainian fauna. One of the perspective directions of this work is participation in the project on preservation of the European mink by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). At this stage, the preparation of keeping conditions of reserve population of these Red Book animals and negotiations with partners are in process.read more
There’s an addition in Feldman Ecopark. In kangaroo couple (red-necked male and albino female), the albino cub was born. The animal was born in the early spring, but only recently began to lean out of a maternal pouch. From the first day, the veterinarians of a Multi-Complex attentively watch the newborn and his mother. The animals live together with other relatives in spacious enclosure equipped with a warm house in case of bad weather.
“We will be able to tell cub’s gender a bit later – meanwhile, it’s better not to disturb the family in vain. They will be inseparable for several months, until the cub ceases to stay in a pouch. But even after that a kid will follow his mother everywhere. We haven’t yet selected the name to young kangaroo, so everyone is able to offer his/her variants, having written on our Facebook page, – told in Feldman Ecopark. – Kangaroos are vegetarians; prefer fresh greens and root crops, while nursing mother has a special diet. We feed her with vitamin-rich vegetables and fruit, such as: pumpkin, carrot, apples and bananas, also for the kid to receive more useful substances with milk.”
It should be noted that both a Feldman Ecopark’s newborn and his parents relate to a distributed species of marsupials, rather widespread in Australia — Bennett’s tree-kangaroo. A small albino population of this species can be found on the island of Bruni, near the coast of Tasmania. They are the ancestors of almost all warm and fuzzy kangaroos living in zoos of all different countries of the world. According to zoologists, in the wild nature, mammals very seldom have albino addition. Albinos often perish before reaching sex maturity because of unmasking color and related genetic diseases.
It should be reminded that three big red kangaroos, two big gray kangaroos and five Bennett’s tree-kangaroos live in Feldman Ecopark. Already two albinos are among them now.
It should be also reminded that there are more than 2,000 animals of 300 species in Feldman Ecopark’s animal collection.read more
Nearly a quarter of a century ago, the Fundamental Law was adopted to protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens of our country and to establish the status of independent European democracy. After numerous challenges, Ukraine still remains true to these high principles, as they are the only possible foundation to built a free, fair and rich society. We can especially clearly see it now, when the striving for changes, the hopes for near improvement of life, which have been clearly demonstrated by Ukrainian people, are connected with external and internal threats, the danger to deepen into the chaos of lawlessness. That is why the main thing to do in order to save our statehood, to save Ukraine is to guarantee the strict observance of the principles of law stipulated by the Constitution. And it is necessary to use this ground to unite the society in order to achieve peace, accord and prosperity.
I sincerely wish you happy Constitution Day!
Let peace and calm always reigns in our big family – in our native Ukraine! I wish all citizens good health, happiness, mutual understanding and well-being! I wish you prosperity, peace and better tomorrow!

Badger found on the outskirts of Saltivka almost a month ago, successfully underwent rehabilitation in the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” and returned to the natural habitat. Now the animal will live at liberty and in safety in the conservation area (the Sloboda National Natural Park.)
“We can say that our badger had a great stroke of luck – here are ideal conditions for life of this species of mammals listed in Ukrainian Red Book earlier, but had, fortunately, restored the population. We hope that it will find couple and continue the family line, – the head of the science and monitoring department of Feldman Ecopark Andrii Hapchenko told. – We plan to develop cooperation with Sloboda NPP, as well as with other colleagues engaged in conservation of nature and biodiversity in our country and beyond its limits. In particular, we consider the possibility of participation in joint projects for recovery of mink, otter and European lynx.”
It should be noted that Feldman Ecopark together with the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) actively participates in preservation and return to the natural habitat of different types of Ukrainian fauna. “Certainly, annual releases of birds and bats are most widely known, but there are other equally interesting programmes and projects, as well. For example, in the nearest future we plan to open The Park of Birds and, under advisory assistance of Odessa Zoo, to launch the project on reintroduction of eagle owl, black kite, white-tailed sea eagle and other Red List species.”, Andrii Hapchenko shared plans.
It should be reminded that the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) is a global environmental organization comprising the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Good Home”, the Bat Rehabilitation Center and some other projects of Feldman Eсopark. WOFARR is aimed at the development and introduction of efficient animal and environment protection strategies, methods and technologies, the development and introduction of the programmes of reduction of risk zones on a global map of flora and fauna, and to unite the world community into the international animal and environment protection network.read more
Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation develops new direction – eco-therapeutic lessons for children with hearing impairments. Pupils of the Kharkiv Special Educational Complex for children with hearing impairments arrived here for two weeks straight. Specialists of the Centre organized for them orientation walks with elements of landscape therapy, animal-assisted therapy and sensory therapy.
“After joint campaign To Hear with Heart we gained a new partner, the institution that sponsors children with hearing impairments. We discussed what specifically we can do for them and developed a small starting programme based on sensory integration. Except acquaintance with the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark, it provides contact communication with some of them, while observation tours are supplemented by the Barefoot Path and inflatable attractions, – the head of psychological service of Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Aliieva told. – The main task at the first stage of psychosocial rehabilitation of children with hearing impairments, as well as any other sensory impairments is an integrated emotionally comfortable acquaintance with the habitat. We seek to diversify visual and sensory interaction with the world around, using capacities provided by the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex.”
According to Tetiana Aliieva, cooperation with the Kharkiv Special Educational Complex for children with hearing impairments will continue to develop. From the beginning of academic year, specialists and volunteers of the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation will make visits with “Kindness lessons”. It should be reminded that similar lessons, provided for children with visual impairments by the V.H. Korolenko Special Educational Complex are currently in second year of implementation.
It should be also reminded that work with people with special needs is one of the main directions of Feldman Ecopark since the moment of its establishment. Since 2013, the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation works in its structure. The specialists of the Centre assisted more than 10,000 children and adults with various diseases and disorders by means of modern methodologies, in particular, eco-therapy and animal-assisted therapy. Besides, inclusive lessons are given in Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark, and in the summer special sessions are organized in the Children’s health-improving and educational camp.read more
The Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex began cooperation with the Patrol Police Department in Kharkiv oblast, whose officers conduct interesting and informative lessons for pupils of the summer camp.
According to Mykyta Synegybskii, the inspector of Outreach Division of the Patrol Police Department in Kharkiv oblast, such work is being conducted in summer camps for children to learn more about the activity of patrol police and about their own rights and standards of conduct as well.
“In general, our goal is to make a stay of children on city streets safer. Today, we visited the summer camp Feldman Ecopark to find time for children and to acquaint them with safety fundamentals, traffic regulations and street safety instructions. Besides, we told about ways of communication with police officers, in what cases police officer can address them, how to behave with strangers, who can pose a potential threat for the child and whom to turn to for assistance, if you got lost. I think that after our communication children became a little closer to police”, – Mykyta Synegybskii noted. Moreover, the story by patrol police officers about particular features of service was interesting, because it included acquaintance to the patrol car. Everyone had an opportunity to get into the car, to feel himself a police officer or one on an important mission. Lessons conducted by patrol police officers in the summer camp Feldman Ecopark will regularly take place once a week, on Tuesdays.
It should be noted that it is not the first joint project of ICF “Oleksandr Feldman Foundation” and Feldman Ecopark with the Main Administration of the National police in Kharkiv oblast. In particular, good results were shown by “Let’s Take Children Away from Streets” programme for children from troubled families and “difficult” teenagers: according to police, none of the participants of the project comes into contact with the law any more.read more
Young biologists of Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark have returned from summer practical training, which they traditionally had at the Biological Research Station under Karazin Kharkiv National University. It is situated near the village of Haidary in the territory of the National Nature Park “Homilshanski Lisy,” which has no analogues in Sloboda Ukraine by the richness and diversity of flora and fauna.
“Our young naturalists come to Haidary to have practical training for the seventh year running, and always return to obtain new knowledge and unforgettable experience here. This time, the kids were occupied with the calculation of pond turtles, had excursions of various biotopes, listened to entomology lectures,” the head of the Young Biologists Club under the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark Anna Pozdniakova told. “Field practice is a very important element of biological education, without which it is difficult to imagine the formation of comprehensive knowledge about the nature. The fact that our students learn it before they start their study in specific higher educational institutions, gives them certain advantages for the choice of future profession. Moreover, these field lessons broaden children’s outlook, teach them to love their native land and carefully treat every living thing on the Earth.”
It should be reminded that one of the largest non-governmental institution of out-of-school education – Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy – functions in Feldman Ecopark for 7 years. The number of its members has already exceeded 1,000. There are more than a dozen of different units and schools here, and the lessons not only broadens children’s outlook, but also give the pleasure of communication with animals. The most popular directions of the Children’s Academy are the Young Biologists Club, the Horse Complex and the Theatre of Children and Animals.read more
The concert of the winners of jazz children and youth festival “Jazz-Fiesta” will take place in the yard of AVEC Gallery (Kharkiv) on June 21. It will be devoted to the Music Day.
The performances will start at 4 PM. The visitors to the Gallery and all fans of music will be able to listen to vocalists, saxophonists, pianists – the students of Kharkiv music schools and higher educational institutions. More than 20 musicians will take part in the concert. According to the organizers, jazz will be a dominating genre, however, they decided not to limit the performers in their choice – both classic and pop melodies will also sound during the concert.
It should be noted that the Jazz-Fiesta festival is held in Kharkiv for several years on the initiative of the professor at Kharkiv State Academy of Culture Vladyslav Altukhov. Every year, it gathers nearly a hundred of musicians aged 5 to 30 from different regions of Ukraine.
Music Day originated in France in 1980s. It is celebrated on June 21 – the longest day of the year. The main features of the festivities are free performances of professionals and amateurs on one stage. All concerts are held open-air – in parks, public gardens, on squares. Tried methods are used to overcome summer heat in Feldman Ecopark – special diet and hydrotherapeutic procedures. Refreshing shower two or three times a day, as well as a constant access to drinking water is a must for almost all animals here. Moreover, nutrition of many of them becomes dietary – less caloric and less heavy for their stomach. But the most popular dishes in the heat are cooled or frozen treats.
“Like in the majority of zoos, we mainly use stationary pools for animals and periodic showers from garden hoses. We are trying to fill the pools with clean water at least once a week. In some enclosures, we have installed a special hydrocooling system – hoses with many small holes, through which the water is sprayed under a big pressure. Bears, hyenas and almost all big feline predators, as well as primates are the biggest fans of hydrotherapeutic procedures – it is an additional entertainment for them,” they tell in Feldman Ecopark. “Ice cream is considered an especially desirable treat in the heat – animals also prefer it, while for some of them it is even necessary for additional heat regulation. We are cooking a special ice cream for our animals – ice with fruits and berries for primates, and ice with meat and fish for predators.”
It should be noted that exotic residents of southern countries (and there are a lot of them in the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark) are enjoying this hot weather. African spurred tortoises are among them. They are now able to spend almost the whole day in their African enclosure. For these natives of semideserts to the south of Sahara our current temperatures are almost ideal.
It should be reminded that the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark consists of 2,000 animals of more than 300 species.read more
The exposition of “Gifted Children — the Future of Ukraine” takes place in the AVEC Gallery (2 floor) and became continuation of an art marathon of children’s creativity, which was launched here at the beginning of spring.
The exhibition collected works of pupils of the Kharkiv Regional House of Children and Youth Activities. According to Oksana Bondarenko, the teacher of a group of fabrics art painting, the exposition comprises painting, graphics, vytynanka, ceramics – fine and decorative applied art.
“We are able to know something new about such studios as Firebird, Kaleidoscope, Palytra design studio and others. The exposition comprised 100 brightest and impressive works of gifted pupils aged from 5 to 15 years, painted in different techniques. Pictures were specially selected for the “Gifted Children — Future of Ukraine” exhibition, as young artists constantly participate in exhibitions of not only city or regional level, but also of the National and International level. It is very important to children to see results of their creativity in expositions to show to parents and friends, to believe in themselves and their own creativity” — Oksana Bondarenko emphasized.
It should be reminded that exhibitions of young artists Fluffy, Toothy and Multi-Colored and World around Us have already been held in the AVEC Gallery under the auspices of an art marathon of children’s creativity.read more
Twenty children from Krasnohorivka – a small town in the area of Joint Forces Operation, close to the delimitation line – have visited Feldman Ecopark. This visit was arranged for them by caring residents of Kharkiv. It was a rare opportunity for these kids to feel a careless joy of happy childhood, to forget (at least for some time) the alarms of the war. In the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex, the visitors were welcomed cordially: they were taken to a observation excursion, acquainted with the representatives of animal collections, entertained on inflatable attractions and fed by a tasty dinner.
“They do not have home there, as the war continues. I had a call to those area yesterday morning and heard shooting and shells bursting. We are glad that we have managed to bring these children to our peaceful life, to show our beautiful Kharkiv, to demonstrate what they should strive for. We hope that they understand that Ukraine does not abandon them,” one of the organizers of the trip, the member of Rotary Club Kharkiv City Ihor Balaka told. “These children were not able to have a normal peaceful childhood for a third or a half of their lives. We shown them all of the best things in our city including, of course, Feldman Ecopark. It is possible to say that here, they blossomed and shed their constraint. They walk, play, laugh, surprise, take photos. Even their eyes have changed!”
According to the organizers of the trip, the project will develop. It is planned to have new excursions, creative exhibitions, charitable auctions and other events.
“Not only these kids need the project. We, adults, also need it in order not to forget what does it mean to be able to empathize, to be able to share either our means or our time, not to forget what does it mean to be a worthy person. When we just published information on Facebook, it turned out that there are a lot of worthy people in our city: some of them offered lunches in their facilities, others offered a cultural programme, financial assistance, transport or their services of a guide to make a tour of the city of Kharkiv,” Ihor Balaka noted. “That is why we are going to continue doing what we do together with our friends and like-minded people – we will take care of children from Krasnohorivka and other children as well. All of them are our children – there’s no such thing as other people’s children!”
It should be reminded that the care about the rising generation is one of the most important fields of activities at the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex Feldman Ecopark. Dozens of projects connected with health improvement and education of children are implemented in it. The event brought together more than 50 participants – teachers, event managers, heads of groups, methodologists from all Kharkiv region. “It is our annual seminar consisting of two blocks: theoretical – teachers share experience, discuss the ways of interesting and innovative organization of summer holidays for children, and a practical one, which traditionally takes place on the basis of Feldman Ecopark. Here we have an opportunity to visit lessons and master classes of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy – Tatiana Kurukina, the methodologist of Information Guidance Department of the Kharkiv Regional House of Children and Youth Activities told. – Here you are able personally to observe how children interact with the nature and animals, to see how interesting it is and to translate elements of ecological education into practice. It is impossible to imagine a better experience, than to plunge into this surprising Ecopark’s environment, to talk to professionals working here.”
In the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex guests were able to visit a rehearsal in the Theatre of Children and Animals, lessons in the Young Cynologist Club. They visited Horse Complex where they met four-legged animals and saw small circus performance. The entomology lesson for the least pupils of Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy was of great interest to workshop participants.
“It is amazing! Our previous education consists of pictures, and here children see how chrysalis turns into a butterfly before their eyes and this magic occurs right now, in real life! They will remember it for life and I’m sure, they will treat all living with love and respect — Tatiana Kurukina shared impressions. — It is very important, most of present children lives in big cities, they lack real communication with the nature.”

On June 9, in many countries all over the world celebrate remarkable and close to everyone International Friends Day (the International Day of Friendship). Cheerful celebration of this holiday also took place in the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex. Besides, the debut took place in the Theatre of Children and Animals, while the Pony Club showed masterful agility at the Horse Complex.
In order that the Friends Day became a real holiday and remembered for a long time, it was enough to join (with friends, of course!) the Feldman Eсopark’s festive programme prepared specially by the International Day of Friendship and including outdoor games, competitions and developing thematic tasks.
Besides, on Sunday in Feldman Ecopark pupils of children and youth studio of circus art Old Circus showed talents and artistic skills at a reporting concert.

Rocky the caracal and Ashera the Bengal cat became new residents of Feldman Ecopark. These representatives of felines were given to specialists of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex by their former owners. Due to their resettlement, they were no longer able to provide all the necessary conditions for the animals.
Rocky and Ashera are currently staying in quarantine: they get used to life in Feldman Ecopark and undergo the required veterinary procedures. They feel fine and soon will settle in the enclosures of the Multi-Complex. They are fed the same way as the other cats in Ecopark – meat, fish, curd, quail eggs.
Rocky is the third caracal in the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark. The native land of these feline animals, which look like lynx, but a little smaller ones and with different genetics, is Africa and western Asia. Caracals are tamed easily: in ancient times, tamed caracals were used in eastern countries to hunt hares, pheasants, peacocks and small antelopes. Now, they are used to frighten birds (mainly guinea fowls) away from airport runways in southern Africa.
Ashera is a domestic Bengal cat, which appeared as the result of cross of domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat – a small cat species from southern and eastern Asia. This animal combines the temperament of a domestic cat and the instincts of a wild animal. Only of Bengal cat lived in Ecopark before.read more

Goodhearted people massively gather fledglings, wishing to rescue nestlings and bring them to the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home”. Specialists ornithologists recommend not to do it – nestlings not always require person’s assistance.
“For the last two weeks people brought more than three tens nestlings to us. This is mainly owlets, horned owls, magpies, little jays and starlings. People think that if they found a fledgling on the ground and it looks lost and loudly shouts, then it by all means must be rescued. That’s not the case – in most cases it is better to pass it by, somewhere nearby fledging’s parents stay and control a situation (the nestling sends them sound signals) — Volodymyr Perekhodovych, the head of birds sector of the Feldman Ecopark told. — At the beginning of summer, the nestlings hatch and, having hardly feathered, they learn to fly. Having fluttered out from a nest, they jump several days on the ground. All this time, parents continue to bring up a fledgling, train it in necessary skills, preparing for independent life. Therefore, we don’t recommend to touch it and furthermore to take away – this could only do harm”.
According to the specialists, the majority of “rescued” nestlings that were taken away home die in the first days because of the wrong diet and nutrition. But even correctly brought up bird cannot be released without special rehabilitation – without useful foraging skills it will die under natural conditions. Most often such “rescued” birds are doomed to lifetime person’s maintenance.
“If you noticed that cats or dogs try to attack a birdies — do not take it away, and instead banish predators. At the same time you can put a nestling on a branch above. If you found a fledgling that sits on a carriageway, just drive away him far away from the place where there might be a car (for example, to the next roadside bush). Only if there is an imminent danger of bird’s death — for example, you found obvious injuries or it doesn’t get on feet – only then you should take a birdie away from the nature and bring it to professionals who will be able to take care of it — Volodymyr Perekhodovych specified. – Here, in Feldman Ecopark, we provide rescued fledglings with treatment, appropriate care, healthy nutrition and a rehabilitation course after which all healthy individuals come back to the habitat. And those who have injuries remain under our guardianship for the rest of life.”
It should be reminded that the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” deals with animal rights protection since 2010. It’s main goal is to rescue the animals from cruel treatment, to help the injured animals and the ones in trouble, to reduce the number of stray animals using only humane methods. There the participants of a workshop were brought by free Feldman Ecopark’s buses.
“In order to protect something, we need to study it at first. It is often about a research of hard-to-reach spots – well, for example, sites where colonies of wetland birds live. New technologies – data of space pictures, aerial photography of unmanned aerial vehicles, modern GPS systems – significantly accelerate field works. Besides, they give rich analytical material and assistance, having studied all factors, to develop management plans concerning conservation areas, campaigns for their protection — the chief of scientific department of Sloboda NPP Nataliia Brusentsova told. – Our workshop consisted of two blocks: in the first block guests shared the techniques of use of GIS-technologies in studying and conservation, and in the second one together with trainers mastered new technical capabilities of drones and other equipment, learned to process the obtained information for creation of models.”
It should be noted that the expert scientists Feldman Ecopark took an active part in the workshop. According to them, knowledge gained during the master classes, they plan to apply during the work on new projects, in particular during creation of big landscape complexes on the principle of safari parks. The animal collection of Feldman Ecopark increases: three cassowaries arrived in the Multi-Complex from a private zoo.
These are the big flightless birds from New Guinea, which is in the Guinness World Records as the most dangerous birds on Earth: cassowaries live a secretive life, but in case of danger, they may strike a very dangerous blow with their powerful legs with long claws.
Ecopark’s new settlers are the very young birds, they are nearly 5 months old (cassowaries live presumably up to 12-19 years in the wild, and up to 40 years in zoos). The visitors to Feldman Ecopark are already able to look at them, as they have already underwent all of the necessary veterinary procedures and settled in the open enclosure equipped with a house, where they can find shelter in case of bad weather. They are fed with meat and by-products, as well as fruits and vegetables, and also take vitamin supplements.
The natural habitat of cassowaries reduces constantly due to the economic activities of people. They are among the species under the threat of extinction, that is why the experts at Ecopark hope that in the future, young cassowaries will become the participants of the programme aimed at preservation and recruitment of rare species.
Cassowaries are the single species of large flightless birds of the Casuariidae family, which inhabit the tropical forests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. The name of the bird derives from the Papuan words kasu weri, which means ‘horned head.’ The height of adult birds reaches 1.5-1.8 m (some birds may grow as high as 2 metres), and the weight is nearly 60 kg. They are the largest birds in Australia and the second largest in the world (after ostriches). They have an outgrowth on their head, which is called a casque. Cassowaries eat fruits, mushrooms, snails, insects, frogs, snakes and other small animals.read more

The new project The Park of Birds is launched in Feldman Ecopark. Its main goal is to preserve rare species of birds and return them to their natural environment. Moreover, it is aimed at the popularization of this field of animal protection and eco-education of youth. It is planned to create Ukraine’s largest and one of the largest European complexes of ornithological enclosures representing local Red List and exotic birds. The first enclosure will be opened in a week. This one will be for scavenger birds – the cinereous vultures will be the first birds to settle there, while the griffon vultures will be settled there a little later.
“The work aimed at the restoration of the populations of Red List fauna, the preservation of biodiversity for the future generations, the upbringing of youth in the spirit of love of the nature and respect to all living creatures. This is the mission we follow for years. The new project is another step on this path, and we make it together with our like-minded persons by attracting the partners in our country and abroad,” Ukrainian MP Alexander Feldman noted.
It should be noted that The Park of Birds project is implemented within the programme of the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) “Preservation, monitoring and perspective reintroduction of Eurasian birds of prey and owls” under the support of the range of Ukrainian and foreign zoos.
“The construction of enclosures for owls and eagle owls, sea eagles and other birds of prey living on our continent. Their neigbourhood will include hornbills, various parrots – the most diverse representatives of feathered fauna of Africa, North and South America, Australia and Oceania. It is expected that the new landscape and exposition zones with water and flightless birds will also appear. All of these ornithological enclosures together will form The Park of Birds complex, which, as we expect, will be one of Ukraine’s largest ones based on the species diversity,” they told in Feldman Ecopark. “We are soon expecting a significant feathered addition to our animal collection within the framework of the cooperation with our European partners on ЕАZА line, and with the zoos in Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.” A huge advisory assistance in the project development is rendered by Odesa Zoo, which has the biggest experience in the issues of breeding and reintroduction of birds, including the Red List ones.”
It should be also noted that in addition to the direct work aimed at the preservation of biodiversity, it is planned to use The Park of Birds project as an eco-educational platform to give lessons for schoolchildren and students, as well as the animal protection campaigns.
It should be reminded that the bird collection of Feldman Ecopark includes nearly 1,500 birds of more than 150 species. It should be also reminded that the project Let’s Rescue Birds Together aimed at the creation and study of nesting-places is implemented by the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex along with the annual challenge Eat&Fly aimed at the creation of bird feeders and the regular release of song-birds and pheasant into the nature.read more
The nine-year-old pupil of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark Olha Buzadzhy took the second place at the National competition Young Researcher. The scientific work “Studying the impact of feed change and density of contents on Viennese emperor’s viability” brought her deserved success.
“Olha and her younger sister Dasha study in the “ABC of Nature” group at the Theatre of Children and Animals. Last year, all young naturalists received caterpillars of Viennese emperor on breeding. The sisters Buzadzhy didn’t become an exception, however they received not five or ten, but more than 50 caterpillars into their family. Girls fed them, observed and conducted researches: how to make the quality of life of caterpillars better— the mentor, the head of the Theatre of Children and Animals Anna Harazhina told told them. — Two experiments by results of which scientific work had been written were made during breeding period. She passed remote stage of the National competition Young Researcher, and Olha was invited to Kiev. The brilliant report, good materials and, of course, inquisitiveness and hard work brought success — Olha returned to Kharkiv with the honorable diploma for the 2nd place”.

Not so long ago, in Feldman Ecopark appeared an enclosure where dwarfish (or barking) mutjac deer and binturongs, named bear cats for appearance and clumsy gait live together. Both species are from Southeast Asia, quite peacefully coexist in the nature and, according to the specialists of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex, perfectly complement one another in an exposition.
“Five binturongs and a couple of muntjacs live in the spacious shady enclosure. The former occupy the lower tier and are active during the day period, while the latter settled on the second tier and leave their lodges only in morning and evening hours. They have no competition for food: deer prefer hay, grain and vegetables, while binturongs eat exotic fruit, quail eggs and honey as delicacy — the zoologists of Feldman Ecopark told. – We often use mixed expositions – it is both enrichment of the environment of animal welfare, and a sight for visitors. Ecopark’s concept ideally provides such zoogeographical locations corresponding to natural biotopes therefore we plan to build enclosures with surprising neighbors further”.
It should be noted that muntjac is rather small deer, making the sounds similar to dog bark in a state of fuss or excitement. Males of this species have protruding teeth in the upper jaw similar to canines, and a long tongue reaches ears. A binturong –is the animal bearing a faint resemblance to a cat and a marten from the Viverridae family. By means of a tenacious tail the animal dexterously climbs trees, while on the ground binturong waddles clumsily like a bear. Though binturongs relate to predators, their diet consists of vegetable food with insects and eggs of birds as proteinaceous additive.

Two little foxes have been recently brought to the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home.” A couple of Kharkiv students bought them out from a hunter. Young people rescued the animals from a sad destiny of becoming live training ‘devices’ for dogs.
“Little foxes – a boy and a girl – were sold at the hunting dog exhibition at a price of UAH 500 per animal. We figured out the destiny of these animals immediately, that is why we bought both of them without hesitation, as the seller sold only them. The fluffy ones spent night in our place and even caused mayhem among the neighbours. In the morning, we took the kids to a veterinary clinic in order to vaccinate them from rabies,” young animal rights activists Bohdan and Yaryna Kulish shared their story. “At the same time, we contacted the specialists, as we understand that it is impossible to keep foxes in a city apartment, that is why we decided to bring them to kind and reliable people. We called a hot line of Feldman Ecopark Good Home,” the number of which we found in the internet, and they immediately agreed to take our red little ones.”
The rescued foxes are in quarantine now. Later, they will undergo rehabilitation and released in the nature.
“The foxes haven’t become tame yet, so they will be able to join the life in natural environment. We are examining them, in case of need, we will cure them and provide them with a proper meat diet suitable for a young, growing organism. After the foxes get stronger and older, we will release them in a safe place,” the head of the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” Iryna Podvoiska told. “On behalf of our Centre and the whole animal rights movement, I would like to thank Bohdan and Yaryna for empathy and responsibility, as you acted as the Real Humans, good job!”

Ukraine’s first interactive dactyl alphabet was presented in Feldman Ecopark today, May 24, within the framework of the project To Hear with Heart. A wooden construction of the alphabet was created by children with hearing disorders – the students of Kharkiv Special Educational Complex – in order to overcome the barriers of communication between hearing people and the ones with hearing disorders.
Within the framework of the alphabet festive opening, a dance flash mob from an inclusive project Total Answer Dancе took place.
“The society is afraid of us and does not understand us,” our children tell. In order to change the situation, they have submitted an application and won a grant, as the result of which this alphabet appeared here for the little visitors to Ecopark. Our children visit the Multi-Complex regularly, that is why it is very pleasant for them to place their first alphabet exactly here,” the deputy director of the Special Educational Complex Halyna Kuklina told.
The To Hear with Heart project won a grant from UPSHIFT Ukraine – the UNICEF’s programme implemented under the support of the European Union. “When children visiting Ecopark see this alphabet and get to know what it is, they will understand that there are children who do not hear, but it is possible and it is necessary to communicate with them as well, but by other means,” the communication manager of UPSHIFT Ukraine Liudmyla Kutsenko emphasized.
Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation has a huge experience of work with different categories of children, including the ones with hearing disorders. Therefore, it will provide support to the students of Kharkiv Special Educational Complex.
“Today, we had the first meeting with these children. Accompanied by the experts, they got to know Ecopark, and we discussed the perspective co-operation steps. In the future, we will be able to develop and introduce the programme of psychosocial rehabilitation for these children,” the head of psychological service of Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Alieva noted. “After all, the children who encounter these peculiarities of development, may suffer from anxiety, shyness, self-doubt and other psychological problems. And they need to learn to overcome them. The experts of our Centre will help them in this, in particular, by introducing them to the specific nature of animal-assisted therapy. Children will have a great positive experience from communication with animals, which help to transfer emotions and overcome fears.”
It should be reminded that the work with people with special needs is one of the main fields of activities of Feldman Ecopark from the moment of its establishment. Additon to the Feldman Ecopark’s animal collection – white-naped cranes (endangered species of the IUCN Red List ) gave birth to nestlings few weeks ago. There are two of them, they stay in the separate enclosure together with parents, near a flamingo and other waterfowl. According to the specialists of a Multi-Complex, this is the first case of hatching at this rare species of birds here – earlier, in the territory of our country, white-naped cranes successfully bred only in the Mykolayiv zoo.
“A couple of white-naped cranes lives here for the second year, in April the female laid two eggs, from which baby birds hatched recently. As soon as it happened, we moved crane family to the separate enclosure to avoid conflicts with other birds — the head of the Birds department in Feldman Ecopark Volodymyr Perekhodovych told. — Cranes are very careful and responsible parents – chase away all strangers from children, feed from a beak with larvae of insects and even cover with wings from a rain. Cranes return to their relatives only after baby birds grow up”.
In Feldman Ecopark, besides the white-naped cranes, representatives of several more species of these birds live. These are Red-crowned cranes, African crowned cranes, Gray cranes, Demoiselle cranes. According to the specialists of a Multi-Complex, some of them have also already laid eggs and hatch out posterity.
The white-naped crane is a bird living in the nature in East Asia. This is the endangered species of the IUCN Red List with prohibited international trade. A major factor of risk for these birds is drainage of boggy territories, suitable for nest site from industrial activities. According to ornithologists, the total number is 4900-5300 individuals.
This is a bird about 190 cm high and weighing 5.6 kg. The only species of cranes with pinkish legs andwhite striped neck. Patches of red naked skin can be seen around eyes. Adult birds have dark gray plumage of the most part of a body; the swing and wing coverts are lighter and have a silvery shade. White-naped cranes are omnivorous — eat both vegetable, and animal food. The main diet comprises rhizomes and sprouts of water plants, grain, insects, fish, shrimps and other small vertebrates.
Public organization To Hear the Future together with the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex carried out a campaign devoted to the Cochlear Implant Day, which was celebrated in Ukraine last weekend.
Especially for children with heavy hearing disorders forced to use a cochlear implant, the organizers of a campaign prepared a rich programme including a tour of Ecopark, communication with animals in the interactive yard, entertaining animation, creative performances of guests, gifts and a table with the sweets. Tickets to a football game Shakhtar — Dynamo became a separate gift to small guests and their parents from the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex and its partners.
“Our fundamental principle is tolerance, transparency and inclusion. A Multi-Complex develops cooperation with public institutions and public organizations in this direction, constantly widening range of adherents and supporting the important initiatives” — told in Feldman Ecopark.
Organizers of the campaign held in Feldman Ecopark under the slogan “I Want to Hear!” reported that its purpose – to draw public attention to a problem of providing cochlear implants to all who need, this operation is expensive and underfunded by the state and the city authorities. Let’s note that according to ENT-specialists, the number of children requiring cochlear implant increases every year.
“Cochlear implantation is an important operation for people, whom hearing aids don’t help anymore. Thanks to it, they will be able to hear and to speak, to live full lives in the society. It is essential that the child started to hear as soon as possible, he could study at usual school with an implant. In this case, special additional conditions or lessons are not required — the head of public organization To Hear the Future Maryna Nykolaieva told. — Our children are comprehensively developed, as well as the ordinary hearing children; they sing, dance, participate in theatrical performances and play musical instruments. That is, there are no barriers and there is nothing impossible for them”.
It should be reminded that work with people with special needs is one of the main directions of Feldman Ecopark since the moment of its establishment. Since 2013, the Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation works in its structure. The specialists of the Centre help children and adults with various diseases and disorders by means of modern methodologies, in particular, eco-therapy and animal-assisted therapy. Besides, inclusive lessons are given in Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark, and in the summer special sessions are organized in the Children’s health-improving and educational camp.
Last Sunday, visitors to the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex were entertained by fixies, who became leaders of a fascinating popular scientific show.
Thematic game programme was held by fixies Simka and Nolik. It was prepared by the Science Day, which is celebrated in Ukraine on the third Sunday of May. The programme also included performance for children with hearing disorders To Hear the Future. Leaders showed amusing scientific experiences with ordinary household supplies. Then Simka and Nolik arranged Fixie-Games — the active game programme for children.
On Saturday, the Theatre of Children and Animals showed performance a Tale of Flowers. The ecological fairy tale told the audience about why it is so important to preserve Red List plants and animals.
On Sunday, initiation into the Theatre’s actors took place here. It is an annual holiday for children who within a year joined our troupe and performed on stage. Participating in fantastic performance, newly minted actors had to pass special tests prepared by “skilled” colleagues in order to swear an oath and to accept mementoes at the end.
Small performance, which participants showed skills in equestrian trick art and dressage, took place on the Horse Complex. Since June, the Horse complex prepares the weekly programme which will begin at 13 p.m. and promises to be very interesting and bright.read more
Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” gave home to three adult nutrias and ten nutria kids. They have recently been found in Sazhyn Yar by the workers, who asked Good Home to take the animals.
“Apparently, the nutria family was set free near the water with the special purpose and out of humanitarian considerations. However, it was made without consideration of safety risks and without a thought about their future winters. These animals are not the representatives of our local fauna – they are bred here artificially, and they are not able to survive our cold winters without human assistance,” the head of Feldman Ecopark Good Home Iryna Podvoiska told. “That is why when our hot line received a call about the nutrias in Sazhyn Yar, we decided to take them as soon as possible, until these rodents (and, first of all, the kids) fall victims of other animals or unkind people.”
The nutrias are currently staying in quarantine; they are examined and undergo necessary veterinary procedures. After that, the new settlers will be transferred to the comfortable enclosure. Most probably, they will stay in Feldman Ecopark with their congeners – there are ten nutrias in the animal collection of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex.
It should be noted that the homeland of nutrias is South America, but the species was acclimatized in Eurasia and North America. The area of habitation extends or reduces depending on warm or cold winter. In some cases, frosty winter caused full extinction of nutrias, like in Scandinavia and northern states of the USA in 1980s.
It should be reminded that Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” deals with animal protection since 2010. Its main tasks is the rescue of animals from cruel treatment, assistance to injured animals or the ones in trouble, the reduction of the numbers of stray animals with the help of humane methods. Since its establishment, the Centre managed to rescue more than 6,000 wild animals and find new owners to nearly 22,000 pets. The project is implemented under the auspices of the International Charitable Foundation “Alexander Feldman Foundation.”read more
The junior school students from the V.H. Korolenko Special Educational Complex visited the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex on May 15, where the complex sensory integration lessons were arranged for them.
In Feldman Ecopark, the school students met with the old friends – retrievers, which they undergo the animal-assisted therapy course with for the second year running. In the company of the four-legged assistants, the children got acquainted with the animal collection of the Multi-Complex: feline predators, bears, exotic birds and other animals. The lessons have been also given in the interactive yard and at the Horse Complex.
According to the head of the psychological service of Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Aliieva, the programme for children with visual impairments was launched two years ago.
“This programme of sensory integration of children with visual impairments is aimed at teaching a child to interact with the world. At the first stage of canis therapy, children got acquainted with the four-legged therapists, learnt to overcome their fears by contacting with the animal world. This year, we decided to move to the next stage – sensory integration, acquaintance with the other representatives of the nature. During the excursion, children used sounds, smells and other information to learn the new species of fauna and learnt which of them they may contact and which are dangerous. The lesson continued in the interactive yard, where the sensory integration took place, as well as the acquaintance with sizes, forms of different animals and their differentiation.”
The finishing part was the visit to the Horse Complex, where the kids were able to ride the specially trained ponies.
According to Tetiana Aliieva, the eco-therapeutic session was arranged open-air, where the background noise and additional sound stimuli are present, while children may be watchful to them. However, the availability of known animals made it possible for the children to feel themselves calm and relaxed.
“Exactly this is the main goal of sensory integration, when a child, with the help of a comfortable animal (a dog, in this case) becomes acquainted with the surrounding world. Later, he or she learns to use this skill, when contacting some other animals. This is the way to overcome the fear, to become more self-confident, which is very important in the rehabilitation of special children,” the psychologist emphasized.
Tetiana Aliieva noted that educators give positive comments on the results of canis therapy, so the work with the children from the Special Educational Complex will continue.read more

The animal protection activists reported to the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” about the badger found in Kharkiv on the outskirts of Saltivka. The forest animal got lost in the metropolis was taken on rehabilitation and it is planned to release the animal to the native habitat after some period of time.
“The badger was brought to us by volunteers of the Kharkiv animal protection organization. According to them, the animal was found in garage cooperative on Valentynivska Street — they used to get a badger from under a porch where the animal hid — the Head of the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” Iryna Podvoiska told. – Our veterinarians already examined the foundling and carried out all necessary procedures. It is a female, rather young and haven’t managed to become tame yet. After rehabilitation we will release it in a safe place – return to the wild nature”.

Recently, children found a raccoon dog in the Southern Railway Museum during the tour – now the animal undergoes rehabilitation in Feldman Ecopark Good Home as well. The traditional Tulip Festival started in Feldman Ecopark: the early cultivars from 120,000 flowers planted throughout the recreational zone of a Multi-Complex have already blossomed. The first tulips and narcissuses of the finest and fantastic shades are already waiting for the experts. The culmination of spring floristic fairy show is expected on May holidays.
According to Mykola Dvoretskiy, the landscape architect of Feldman Ecopark, every spring the mass blossoming of tulips and narcissuses comes gradually — everything depends on weather and plant varieties.
“We annually fill up a collection, plant new bulbs – this time we planted 57,000 flowers. We have more than 50 sorts of tulips for every taste: Lilyflowering, Peonyflowering, Fringed, Double. Coloration suits to every fency. Almost all varieties, including rare sorts, such as Orange Angelique, Golden Parade, Balerina and Barcelona are presented here.” — Mykola Dvoretskiy told. – All this beauty will smoothly blossom replacing each other – from Early to Late since the end of April prior to the beginning of June. If there is no cold snap or heavy rains. The maximum number of participants of the Tulip Festival will be for May 9. But already for Easter, on April 28 it will be possible to see about 20,000 great flowers”.
It should be noted that in the Middle East – the homeland of a tulip – this flower represented peace, tranquility, natural renovation and spiritual self-perfection. Tohe rganizers of the Tulip Festival want to share this mood with all guests to Feldman Ecopark.
It should be reminded that annually besides the spring Tulip Festival, the fall Chrysanthemum Ball takes place in the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex of Feldman Ecopark. This is the flower festival, largest in our country — it traditionally opens in the first October weekend and brings together a great number of guests from all Ukraine and the near abroad. Every time it breaks own records: in 2018 about 60 thousand people arrived to admire about 40,000 chrysanthemums of 25 sorts, which have been planted and exhibited here.
Members of the Horse Complex Feldman Ecopark participated in the Festival of equestrian trick art “Centaurs”, which was held on April 20-21 in the Kyivan Rus’ Park. This large-scale show brought together both best horse stuntmen of Ukraine who often represent our country at foreign competitions and guests from other countries. Numerous audience came to see backward astride riding, upside-down and two-horse riding, horse pyramid and other dizzy tricks performed by our riders. A performance of the team of Feldman Ecopark’s Horse Complex (this year it comprised 13 young horse riders) gained interest of the audience. According to Vladyslav Smalenii, the head of the head of the sports and recreational direction of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark, it was a successful debut.
“More than 50 sportsmen participated in trick riding competitions (military trick types.) They competed in implementation of difficult tricks demanding arranged work of a horse and the rider: arabesques, breaks, pistoles, crosses, different racks. Our horsemen acted in different nominations and were quite successful. Our military trick rider Yevhen Tuzov even won a honourable first place in the senior juniors category — Vladyslav Smalenii told. – I would like to thank our friends from the Poltava equestrian trick theatre “Four Horseshoes” for beautiful horses they gave to our command for participation, and in general for active assistance and support at the festival.”
It should be reminded that the members of the Feldman Ecopark’s Horse Complex successfully debuted at the Festival of equestrian trick art “Centaurs” last fall. Besides, performances of Anastasiya Zhezheri and Daria Maksymenko drew attention of the audience and the jury and were highly estimated.
It should be reminded that the Horse Complex is one of the main structural units in the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark. It includes the group of classic equestrian sports, centre for non-Olympic equestrian sports, horse theatre and pony club. It should be also reminded that the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy of Feldman Ecopark is one of Ukraine’s largest non-governmental out-of-school education institutions: the number of its members has already exceeded 1,000 children. In summer, when the Children’s Health and Education Camp is open in the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex, more than 10,000 children are attending the Academy.read more

Tantrum is always inconvenient. Mother wants to vanish into thin air while her kid rolls on the ground, and surrounding people shake their heads reproachfully. How to construct communication with the child at these difficult moments? The experts at the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation give advices.
“Children are very limited in forms of communication. Most often tantrum is a challenge for contact, a request to talk and pay attention” — note in the Centre. The experts suggest following simple rules in this case:
• Forget about shame. You are the parent who wants to hear his/her own child: let your child express himself even in the crowded place.
• Embrace. Embraces have the most wonderful force to calm, at the level of feelings they carry the person to that period when he was in mother’s womb, the safest and protected place for all his life.
• Apologize. The child has to know that you respect his feelings — be not afraid to apologize for neglecting his requests.
• Make a compromise. If desirable purchase is too expensive, offer your child the cunning choice: “What do you want more, this red car or to visit the real lion in Feldman Ecopark?”
• Teach the child patience. Do not hurry to run for a favorite bear or tasty cookie on short notice. First, tell: “I will surely bring you everything, wait until I finish my business.”
• Do not ignore tantrum. Frequent crying that the parent ignores can cause headaches, temperature increase, vomiting. It is far worse if the child stop searching for communication with the parent, indifferent to his feelings.
“Build a tent at home and invite your child to stay there for a while. Now it is your oasis where it is convenient to be secretive and tell important events of the day. Apologize, talk about the cause for resentment and think up together how to resolve a conflict. You can draw each other cards or collect bouquets of field flowers, non-standard creative decisions will be useful” — the head of psychological service of Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Tetiana Aliieva advises.read more
With the outset of warm weather, representatives of the animal collection of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex of Feldman Ecopark leave winter apartments and return to summer enclosures. Some animals and birds can already be seen in expositional enclosures, others wait for warmer weather. Final summer resettlement will finish at the end of the next month.
According to the zoologists of Feldman Ecopark, process of resettlement of thermophilic animals to summer enclosures from places of their wintering has already began. So, the ocelot and some birds have already moved.
“Special conditions for wintering in our climate are necessary to the most part of animal collection Feldman Ecopark, such as hibernating steppe marmots, apes, reptiles, many species of birds etc. For example, the apes will be moved to expositional enclosures when stable warm weather is established and night time temperature rises above 10˚C” — told in Eсopark.
It is planned to complete process of animal return to summer enclosures by the end of May when weather allows thermophilic species to leave winter apartments.
It should be reminded that the animal collection of Feldman Ecopark comprises 3,000 animals of more than 300 species. The ape collection of Feldman Ecopark is one of the biggest in Eastern Europe. It comprises about 250 individuals of nearly 30 species, including those listed in the IUCN Red List.read more

This weekend, April 13-14, the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” is going to re-launch its traditional for warm season stray animal settlement campaigns Saving the Life You Find a Friend!
Starting from this weekend and till the beginning of cold season, the Good Home’s tents will be located in two places – in the territory of Feldman Ecopark and near the underground station Tsentralnyi Rynok – each weekend. The voluntary animal rights activists, who rescue stray animals, as well as the owners, whose pets gave birth to babies, will be able to offer everyone to open their hearts and take a kitten, puppy, guinea pig, fancy rat, rabbit or other homeless animal to their homes. Only healthy animals are allowed to take part in these campaigns. Moreover, there will be the discount vouchers for sterilization of both stray and domestic dogs and cats.
“The campaigns Saving the Life You Find a Friend! have already proven their effectiveness: the numbers of volunteers, who take part in them, and settled animals increases constantly. If the weather is favourable, people, who brought animals to our campaigns last year managed to find new owners to dozens of animals. September was a record-breaking month, when the Good Home’s workers and volunteers settled more than 300 animals!” the head of Feldman Ecopark Good Home Iryna Podvoiska.
The campaigns will take place every Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 4 PM near the Central Market (underground station Tsentralnyi Rynok) and from 10 AM to 6 PM in Feldman Ecopark. The Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” took on rehabilitation a raccoon dog with serious traumas found by visitors of the Southern Railway Museum under one of the exhibited engines.
According to the head of Good Home Iryna Podvoiska, a raccoon dog was brought to clinic; the specialists examined it and found a great number of mites. A dog had anemia, dehydration and wounds on a neck from being bitten by some animal. The specialists made an injection against mites and provided all necessary medical aid. Now the raccoon dog feels better, but it is still very weak. However, the animal already began to go out after dark and to eat. So far, it is difficult to say how long it will take for its rehabilitation. If the animal couldn’t recover completely for return to the natural habitat, then it will live in “Feldman Ecopark Good Home”.
“Wild animals, such as foxes, raccoon dogs and others are increasingly found on streets of Kharkiv where they obviously do not belong: forest inhabitants in the city are trapped by a set of dangers that they’re not aware of. Besides, they can bring dangerous diseases, in particular, a rabies. Among the reasons of this phenomenon is the method of irrevocable catching of stray dogs with their future euthanasia. When using of humane method of CSVR (capture, sterilization, rabies vaccination, return to natural habitat) dogs do not allow wild animals to replace them in urban environment, at the same time they are not aggressive in relation to the person and do not breed.” — the head of the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” Iryna Podvoiska told.
It should be noted that the raccoon dogs requiring rescue and rehabilitation often get in the crosshairs of Feldman Ecopark Good Home specialists. At the end of December 2018, the Centre took on rehabilitation a raccoon dog with broken hind legs. Kind-hearted people found the animal near the road in one of Kharkiv regions and brought in Feldman Ecopark.

The exhibition attracts not only with a variety of genres, but also with brightness of paints, richness of themes and plots, freshness of perception, immediacy of reproduction, a positive spirit. Art compositions show ability of young authors to visualize the creative plan — the organizers of an exhibition tell. — The world of children’s creativity has interesting viewpoints on everything always different from the adult’s: on people who live next door, on nature giving inspiration for creativity, overall world around. The traditional, sixth release of bats took place in Feldman Ecopark last Sunday. This time about 1,000 bats flew up into the evening sky of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex. All of them were rescued by animal protection activists from different corners of Ukraine last winter and underwent rehabilitation in the only specialized Center for these Red Book animals in our country. Hundreds of Kharkiv citizens as well as chiropterologists from Australia, Brazil, Germany, Poland and Switzerland who arrived to the international panel Kharkiv Bat Meeting became guests and participants of the event.
“Solemn release of bats to nature gathered together citizens with their families. It is an example of successful eco-educational work — that’s what we can teach others. Our foreign colleagues mentioned this fact today — the head of the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark Anton Vlashchenko told. – Our Center takes great pain to develop this direction in parallel with scientific activity. For example, today we presented to the experts and public the new enclosure with bats (Bat Collider). It’s a really unique object intended for the scientific and educational purposes as well”.
According to Anton Vlashchenko, the new open-air enclosure is located in a forest zone, in some removal from the main tour routes. It has ring-shaped form (that’s why it is called Bat Collider) that allows bats to fly with a usual speed, without bumping obstacles.
“Such constructive decision has no analogs in Europe where open-air enclosures are exclusively domed and squared. It will allow us to conduct a number of important researches on bat behavior, connected with their hunting for insects and echolocation — Anton Vlashchenko noted. — Besides, visitors to a Multi-Complex will have an opportunity to observe behavior of these surprising animals almost in natural conditions. We’re already working up a plan of summer evening tours with lectures and demonstrations for inquisitive persons”.
Besides, it is planned that the laboratory and a shelter for those bats that cannot be returned to the natural habitat because of injuries or for other reasons will work on the basis of Bat Collider. Special mini-caves will be constructed for other bats in the territory of Feldman Ecopark. The first samples made of cement were shown during the event held on Sunday.
It should be reminded that the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark is a unique animal protection organization not only for Ukraine, but also for entire Eastern Europe. Since its establishment, it rescued more than 12,000 bats, all species of which are in Ukrainian Red Book.read more
Traditional spring event, the release of different species of forest birds to nature took place in Feldman Ecopark on April 7. Nearly 2,000 songbirds and more than 200 pheasants returned to the natural habitat within the programme of the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) for rare species reintroduction and restoration of Ukrainian animal and bird populations.
About 10 bird species (chaffinches, Eurasian siskins, goldfinches, forest canaries, common redpolls, linnets and other forest singers) returned to nature. Among them are birds rescued by volunteers and rehabilitated in the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” as well as those rescued from poachers.
This lovely spring Sunday, the traditional event of bird release drew attention of a large number of Kharkiv residents and visitors – guests to the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex. Besides, pupils of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy Feldman Ecopark and the founder of a Multi-Complex, the Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Feldman were among the participants of this event.
“For years, systematic work on restoration of bird populations has been conducted in Feldman Ecopark and necessarily imply constancy. It’s a very important mission to support a biodiversity originated from our nature, as it is a subject of large number of threats now, and first of all because of “don’t care” attitude of a person. Therefore, we pay special attention to reintroduction to the habitat both of birds and many other animal species” — Oleksandr Feldman emphasized.
“Goldfinches and other wild songbirds of Ukraine suffer from poachers smuggling many thousands of individuals outside our country, bird populations are seriously reduced because of such actions. With the support of WOFARR, we work on restoration of these populations. The birds released today in a forest zone of Feldman Ecopark will start families, raise nestlings and spread to the nearby forests. The introduction of pheasants in our territory is another perspective direction.” — the specialists of Feldman Ecopark told.
It should be reminded that in Feldman Ecopark, except birds, traditionally release squirrels, tortoises and other animals to the habitat, return in the nature of animals of different species rescued and rehabilitated in the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home”, develop the WOFARR programmes for reintroduction of ungulates, birds of prey and other endangered species.

The workers of Ecopark were joined by its friends, particularly the employees of AVEC Companies Group – nearly 500 persons. They cleaned the territory of the park and prepared it for the season.
“We are preparing Ecopark to welcome our guests actively. Soon, we will have an official opening of the spring-summer season, and we are preparing to it actively. There is a lot of work after winter: it is the cleaning of last year’s leaves and branches, garbage from the road, painting, whitewashing… The territory of Multi-Complex is huge and so are the amounts of work. That is why we invite all friends of Ecopark to join our spring campaigns. We provide all volunteers with the necessary tools and we are ready to remove the garbage,” the head of the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex Andrii Stronov noted. “I would like to thank all participants of our today’s clean-up, and the special gratitude to the AVEC Companies Group’s workers.”
It should be noted that spring clean-ups aimed at preparation of Feldman Ecopark to the season take place in the Multi-Complex every year. The Head of the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” Iryna Podvoiska took part in a round-table conference devoted to the topic “Urban Animals: a Problem and Methods of Solution” in Kharkiv press club. During the conference, the participants (Good Home, Animal Help League and ME Centre for Animal Treatment) discussed different methods of stray animal control.
In her speech, Iryna Podvoiska emphasized the advantages of use of humane method of CSVR (capture, sterilization, rabies vaccination, return to natural habitat), which Good Home helps to introduce in the range of towns in Kharkiv and other regions.
“Everyone chooses own way: either the modern and humane one, like it happens in many other countries, or with the use of obsolete methods of irrevocable capture of stray dogs. More and more Ukrainian regions and towns introduce the CSVR method successfully: the number of bites decreases, the aggression of animals disappears, and rabies does not spread,” Good Home’s chief emphasized. “When capture and euthanasia of dogs is used, new wild animals replace them and bring risk of this dangerous disease spreading: for example, Good Home’s hot line is contacted nearly every day about foxes in the city of Kharkiv.”
Moreover, Iryna Podvoiska shared the experience of owner search for stray animals with the help of special fairs, as well as taking photos of cats and dogs and posting them on social networks with their stories: nearly 90 percent of stray animals are settled by Good Home’s workers and volunteers this way. She also drew attention to the importance of propaganda of responsible treatment of animals, particularly among children. “Kindness lessons demonstrate good results. During these lessons, children learn that a pet is not a toy, but a huge responsibility,” she noted.
It should be reminded that the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” is engaged in animal protection since 2010. Its main tasks include the rescue of animals from cruel treatment, assistance to injured animals and the ones in trouble, the reduction of the number of stray animals with the help of humane methods. The total of more than 6,000 wild animals were rescued and nearly 22,000 pets found new home thanks to the Centre. Spring is time when bats (all species living in Ukraine are included in the Red List) wake up after hibernation. The specialists of the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark tell about what should be done if you found a bat on the street, or it flew into your house.
“The most important thing — do not take a small animal barehanded, it can painfully bite you. A bat is frightened even more, than you are. If you found a bat on the earth, pick it up with a piece of cloth, a cap or gloves. Bats usually do not spend time on the earth, so, the small animal can be injured or weakened. The bat found on the earth must be brought to the specialists of the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark” — the specialists tell.
“If a bat flew into your house and behaves actively, this usually happens in the summer, you must let it out. For this purpose, block the way to other rooms and open a window. Make sure that a small animal haven’t huddled up somewhere. If you saw a bat has been flying long enough and sat down on a wall, you can accurately remove it wearing thick or leather gloves. If you release a small animal from a hand, you must do it in the evening, and only if temperature is over 2ºC. Hold your hand with a bat above the ground, do not release it from a window or a balcony — the bat could be injured while searching for an exit from your apartment. If the animal is warm to the touch, but doesn’t want to fly away, it is necessary to report the specialists of our Center about it — emphasized in the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark. — If you found a bat at your apartment, but it almost doesn’t move and shouts loudly, perhaps, it’s just awoken from wintering. Such happens in the winter and at the beginning of spring. Such individual cannot be released under any circumstances; a bat must be brought to our specialists. If it is summer or fall, then put a small animal in a box and release it in the evening (on the condition that the temperature is over 2ºC)”.

Parents of children with Down syndrome, who are also called ‘sun children,’ often face the problem of adaptation of their kids in society. Advices about what to do for the socialization of children with this genetic disorder are given by the specialists of the Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation today, on the World Down Syndrome Day.
“The main answer is to act like any other parent with a child. Of course, every child has his/her individual peculiarities, preferences and abilities, and the work with the ‘sun children’ is also specific,” the head of the Centre’s psychological department Tetiana Aliieva tells.
If parents choose not to hide this child from the society, they should adhere to the following recommendations:
— if you choose a regular school for a child with Down syndrome, first, it is necessary to look at the group and at the reaction of children. The main thing for you is a positive attitude of children to each other in the group;
— introduce yourself openly and honestly, tell about you and your child, about what he/she likes and about his/her passions;
— ask your child whether he/she likes to be in the group among children;
— distribute loads. First of all, a kid should stay in school during only several lessons. The main thing is that your child likes the school instead of being tired of it;
— develop your kid. It will help you to learn more about the child’s abilities and preferences.
And of course, the communication with the nature and animals are good for the socialization of children with Down syndrome. Some types of animal-assisted therapy give good results. The Feldman Ecopark Centre for Psychosocial Rehabilitation can offer this, as it has developed the special programme for children with Down syndrome.
Reference. Down syndrome was first described in 1866 by a British doctor John Langdon Down. Nearly a hundred years later, in 1959, a French scientist Jérôme Lejeune grounded a genetic origin of this syndrome, which is defined by the availability of the extra chromosome in human cells.read more
