Traditional spring event, the release of different species of forest birds to nature took place in Feldman Ecopark on April 7. Nearly 2,000 songbirds and more than 200 pheasants returned to the natural habitat within the programme of the World Open Foundation for Animal Rehabilitation and Reintroduction (WOFARR) for rare species reintroduction and restoration of Ukrainian animal and bird populations.
About 10 bird species (chaffinches, Eurasian siskins, goldfinches, forest canaries, common redpolls, linnets and other forest singers) returned to nature. Among them are birds rescued by volunteers and rehabilitated in the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home” as well as those rescued from poachers.
This lovely spring Sunday, the traditional event of bird release drew attention of a large number of Kharkiv residents and visitors – guests to the Social and Humanitarian Multi-Complex. Besides, pupils of the Children’s Ecology and Nature Study Academy Feldman Ecopark and the founder of a Multi-Complex, the Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Feldman were among the participants of this event.
“For years, systematic work on restoration of bird populations has been conducted in Feldman Ecopark and necessarily imply constancy. It’s a very important mission to support a biodiversity originated from our nature, as it is a subject of large number of threats now, and first of all because of “don’t care” attitude of a person. Therefore, we pay special attention to reintroduction to the habitat both of birds and many other animal species” — Oleksandr Feldman emphasized.
“Goldfinches and other wild songbirds of Ukraine suffer from poachers smuggling many thousands of individuals outside our country, bird populations are seriously reduced because of such actions. With the support of WOFARR, we work on restoration of these populations. The birds released today in a forest zone of Feldman Ecopark will start families, raise nestlings and spread to the nearby forests. The introduction of pheasants in our territory is another perspective direction.” — the specialists of Feldman Ecopark told.
It should be reminded that in Feldman Ecopark, except birds, traditionally release squirrels, tortoises and other animals to the habitat, return in the nature of animals of different species rescued and rehabilitated in the Centre for Wild, Exotic and Domestic Animals Rescue “Feldman Ecopark Good Home”, develop the WOFARR programmes for reintroduction of ungulates, birds of prey and other endangered species.
This day, the traditional event devoted to the release of bats rescued by the Bat Rehabilitation Center of Feldman Ecopark will take place in Ecopark as well.
