There’s an addition in the ape collection of the Social and Humanitarian Complex of Feldman Ecopark. This time — among the representatives of Macaca genus, namely Magots, or Barbary apes.

According to the specialists of Feldman Ecopark, the baby was born healthy and already joined the relatives together with mother. “The mother and baby are well and healthy. They stay in a group among other magots. When it gets warmer, they will be moved to the expositional enclosure together with other thermophilic primacies” — the employees tell.

Barbary Macaque — the only representatives of Macaca genus living outside Asia. They live in mountain forests of North Africa. Moreover, they’re the only wild monkeys widespread in territories of Europe, namely on the rocks of Gibraltar. Monkeys are covered with dense yellowish-brown wool, body weight of adult males is reported to be 15 kg, females are smaller. Places of their distribution in the habitat reach height more than 2,000 meters above sea level. In the territory of Africa, these monkeys are sizeable, but those living in Gibraltar are endangered species of the IUCN Red List.

It should be reminded that the ape collection of Feldman Ecopark comprises 5 Barbary Macaques. Overall, it totals 250 individuals of nearly 30 species, including those listed in the IUCN Red List. In 2018, 25 monkeys were born in Feldman Ecopark.
